English at an Indian
Wedding, sitting in
The crowd among
The drums and
Auspices like weeds
Among the cultivated
Saries with their
Yellow and magenta
Blue topaz and
Peridot sheen.
Looking on Indians,
At home in their religion.
At One with
Whatever it is that
Made them.
The English hope It made them too,
When they come to looking
In the dusty files labelled
Wedding, funeral, birth.
God and gods and people and family weave
Together and in this
Web, the couple
Catch the tricks
They need,
Sharing the cords,
Keeping them taught
With Love,
The remover of all obtacles,
Ganesh.

Mary moo Mary
You were there
When the blossom
Came, Mary you
Were there when
The winter
Went, Mary you
Are here just like
A Gran.
Standing ironing
Sitting moaning,
Laughing, crying,
Listening to ‘Lipstick
On your collar,’
Telling tales from
The betting shop or
You and Marge’s
Latest trip to Wimpy,
Brian, Moreen
Leighton,
Patrick the Irish
Queer next door.
Have some more
Cream slice,
Bread pudding,
You’ll buy four for
For me, ‘Only a paahnd
Fifty’, to take home.
Or pie and mash for sister.
YOu? No, no you
Don’t eat like
You used to,
In the caravan,
Round, happy,
Just the sun and
Slot machines and
Walks along
The sea, girls
On leads, so’s
We dont ‘draaan’.
Please remember,
We thank you
And love you like a
Gran.

Rumba timba samba
Cha cha Cha
Wa wan Co
Sip, gulp, kiss
Swing, lunge, slide
Sway hip up
Round, over Cuba libre,
Marakas quake
Making jitter
Rythm pickups
Through the smooth
Flow of breeze from
Caribbean waves
And the worldly gurgle of Chevrolets.

Patient no longer
lips warm, feet warm
Hands soft and sentient.
Gone is the rumble and
The heart ache within,
here is Life soft and sweet
And ready to eat whole,
Nothing to peel off
or hack through.
Eyes whole, heart WHOLE,
Life long and waiting:
Where have you been?
i’ve been expecting you all this time.’
‘What have you planned for me?’
‘Plan? You’ll see- Be kind
To yourself as you find your way, make it easy and slow, as befits a guest,
Remember, I am Life, your host,
From this life to the next.

Firm and awake is how I feel,
Now that day is done
And night is
Come to stop
The whirr of consciousness.
Today was easy,
There was no drag,
Low air resistance and I
Soared high, even
At my desk, sat on foam.
After lunch came cruel gut,
Prompting truancy, again
the shame of crunch and swallow-
But it passed and day dawned anew
With afternoon and bloodstream teeming-
Tasks were done and now,
I’m happy to explore the night and trip on sleep, by chance,
Busy looking for a dream.

Hope fits nicely into Today.
Yesterday was small,
An awkward size, to small to
Hold an egg-
It held salt, as much as filled it, instead.
Hope fits today,
Fills it full, pills
Throb through veins,
Skin drinks up the breeze,
Food floats light and
Sense is song
Happy strings strike happy chords
Haphazardly, and I realise I’m
Making progress and
Heart heaves happy twang!

What disrupts balance?
What brings balance?
Perhaps it is not a thing sought but
Rather, the knowing how to seek-
I won’t summon thirst and hunger,
Let them call me when they will,
Let them approach with steady paces,
I’ll greet them them with slow, frugal
Hospitality, and hope they’ll be the kind of guests
Who leave early, to beat the traffic.

Happy day started at night for me,
Whether from pills or injections
Or Prunes and live yoghurt
Makes some difference,
But not too much.
Am I in control or merely
A passenger in a rusty car
Fuelled by pharmaceutic diesel
And in need of repair and care?
Bathe me in water and leave me
To dry in the sun.
Take me in before I fry but
keep me somewhere cool and clear
Where static glare is fenced
Out and love relit.
